Online keynote Erik Ringmar ‘Cultural Appropriation. Museum Displays in an Age of Post-Colonial Guilt’

On Friday morning March 31 from 09:30 to 10:15, Professor Erik Ringmar will give an online keynote lecture on the function of looting and exhibiting of ethnographic and Asian and African art for the self-perception of Europeans. An important case is the looting of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing in 1860. The keynote marks the start of a closed workshop 'Culture Under Attack, Genocide Under Scrutiny: Re-centering Culture and Revisiting the Concept of 'Cultural Genocide''.

Erik Ringmar is professor of international politics and political science at Ibn Haldun University, Istanbul. He has a PhD from Yale University, worked at the LSE in London for 12 years and in China for 7 years. In 2013 he published the book Liberal Barbarism: The European Destruction of the Palace of the Emperor of China (New York: Palgrave Macmillan) and his latest book, Moving Bodies: Embodied Minds and the World That We Made was published this year at Cambridge University Press.

The speaker will be introduced by NIOD researcher Klaas Stutje. The lecture is in English.
