The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has granted Dr. Uğur Üngör a VIDI-grant of max. 800.000 Euro, for research into paramilitarism. Paramilitaries are special units that commit mass violence against civilians during ethnic conflicts. These groups maintain close ties with political elites, but often also with organized crime. This research project will examine the relationship between organized crime and political violence, and explain how and why paramilitarism arises and contributes to ethnic conflict.
Dr. Uğur Üngör is a researcher at the Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, and also Lecturer at the Department of History at Utrecht University. His main areas of interest are state formation and nation formation, with a particular focus on mass violence.
