Frank van Vree will succeed Marjan Schwegman as the director of NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. NIOD is one of the research institutes of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Van Vree is currently the Dean of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. He will take up his post on 1 September 2016. Because Schwegman will step down on 1 February, Wichert ten Have, former Head of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at NIOD, will serve as interim director.

The Dutch government has requested the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies to carry out an exploration of the sources and scholarly literature that have become available since the 2002 publication of the NIOD report that described and analyzed the events leading up to, and taking place during and after the fall of Srebrenica in 1995.
