History of slavery and colonialism

On November 7 researcher Lauren Lauret officially presented the preliminary study on the colonial and slavery history of the University of Amsterdam to the Executive Board and shared it with the UvA community. Lauren conducted the preliminary investigation on behalf of the NIOD.

In 2024, the Executive Board of the UvA commissioned NIOD to conduct preliminary research into the relationship between the UvA, the colonial past, and the history of slavery since its founding in 1632. Little was known about the role of the UvA and its predecessor, Athenaeum Illustre, in colonial history.

The report identifies the areas on which the main research should focus, the sources that can be consulted, and how the UvA community can be effectively involved. The preliminary research was completed in June 2025. With a focus on six different lines of follow-up research, the UvA can systematically and thoroughly map out colonial connections and compare them with other Dutch universities.

As a knowledge center in the field of War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies, NIOD has significant expertise in the area of colonial violence and the central role of knowledge formation in this context. NIOD's preliminary research into the University of Amsterdam and its colonial and slavery history reveals the complex intertwining of knowledge and violence, as well as its long-term impact.
