Can the NIOD archives be searched by surname?

The possibilities of searching the NIOD archives by surname are limited. Many of the archives and collections cannot be searched by name. Some of the archives that are searchable by name are for example the clipping collection (articles from newspapers and magazines about various people and subjects) and the so-called Erelijst van Gevallenen (Honour Roll of the Fallen). These also contain information about Jewish war victims and resistance fighters.

The NIOD has personal information regarding Jewish war victims and resistance fighters, however, it must be stressed that our data are far from complete. General questions along the lines of ‘what do you have about the Jansen family?’ are virtually impossible for us to answer. Please make sure that you can provide some context information when searching for information about a particular person, e.g. ‘he was in the resistance in The Hague and was arrested by the Germans’.

The Honour Roll of the Fallen contains the names of some 18,000 Dutch people who died in the armed struggle against the German or Japanese occupiers, in the resistance, or as crew members of the merchant navy. The Honour Roll can be accessed on the website. The application forms for the Honour Roll that were completed by the next of kin of the fallen, can be found in the NIOD archives, collection 245 ('Erelijst van Gevallenen - aanvraagformulieren’ (‘Honour Roll of the Fallen - application forms’)). We do not have the forms of all of the people on the Honour Roll.
