On January 1, 2024, the project The Dutch Railways during World War II was launched. This research builds on the pilot study with the same title, which was completed in 2022. The Dutch Railways are financing the research.

The research covers the following aspects:

  • Transport and deportation of persecuted persons and forced laborers;
  • The business operations and results of the NS before, during, and immediately after the occupation;
  • The attitude of the management towards the occupying forces, the German Reichsbahn, and other German authorities;
  • Resistance activities within the company and contacts with resistance organizations and the government in London, particularly in connection with the railway strike of 1944-45;
  • Freight transport in the service of the occupying forces.
