Hunger Winter 1944 - 1945

In the winter of 1944-1945, known as the Hongerwinter or ‘Hunger Winter’, food and fuel were in short supply in the Netherlands. The residents of large and small towns in the provinces of Utrecht, North and South Holland were hit hard by the ensuing famine, and many people left for the east or north of the country to find food. These so-called ‘hunger treks’ were usually made by bicycle or on foot. Children were also sent to the countryside to recuperate during this period.
