Judith Niessen studied art history at Utrecht University and then began her international career at auction house Sotheby's. In addition to her expertise of old master paintings, she was also responsible for Nazi-related provenance research in the Netherlands. From 2007 to 2018, she worked as an independent researcher. Judith collaborated on several exhibitions and was one of the authors of the collection catalogues of Early Netherlandish paintings of the Rijksmuseum and that of Early Netherlandish drawings of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. She also conducted provenance research for individuals and institutions. From 2018, she served as Head of Collections at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History.
