Since November 2021, Maarten has been associated with the Expert Centre Restitution as a researcher. He conducts provenance research on cultural property looted during the Nazi regime. In addition, he is interested in the problems surrounding the restitution of looted art from the colonial era.
Between 2018 and 2021, Maarten worked as a research assistant for the research programme Independence, Decolonization, Violence and War in Indonesia 1945-1950, first at KITLV and later at NIOD. Maarten studied political science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (MSc, 2012) and cultural anthropology at the University of Uppsala (MA, 2017).
