Event: Remembering the Second Indochina War

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second Indochina War, better known internationally as the Vietnam War. The consequences of this war continue to leave deep scars in the lives of people in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the United States, and also in European countries. To mark this commemorative moment, SPUI25 is organizing a roundtable discussion on Thursday, May 23, in which researchers and stakeholders will reflect on the diverse histories, personal experiences, and recovery processes after the war.

Researchers Tam Ngo and Dat Nguyen from NIOD will be joining the discussion. Tam Ngo's research focuses on social healing and environmental restoration in post-conflict areas, with a particular focus on religion, forensic science, and memory practices in Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora. Dat Nguyen researches the legacy of war in Vietnam, exploring themes such as religion, care, mental health, and ecology. During the meeting, both will offer a new perspective on how war continues to have an impact and why it is important to reflect on this in a committed and thoughtful manner.

In addition to Tam Ngo and Dat Nguyen, Kevin Pham (University of Amsterdam), Rimko van der Maar (University of Amsterdam), Stephanie Benzaquen-Gautier (IIAS, Leiden) and Andreas Kleiser (International Commission on Missing Persons) will also be present. Topics to be discussed include colonial history, forgotten perspectives such as those of Dutch activists and refugees, and the global search for missing soldiers.
