Jewish Rotterdam Persecution, disenfranchisement, return, and restoration of rights

The history of the Jewish community in Rotterdam is the focus of the new publication Jewish Rotterdam by former NIOD researcher Marleen van den Berg. Commissioned by the municipality of Rotterdam, she researched the fate of the third largest Jewish community in the Netherlands. To mark the publication, Marleen presented the first copy to the mayor of Rotterdam on October 15.

The book shows how the concept of war took on a special meaning for the Jewish residents of Rotterdam in May 1940. The bombing destroyed their synagogues and part of the population lost their homes and possessions. The letters and diaries of three Jewish families form the central theme of the research. These personal stories reveal the diversity within Rotterdam's Jewish community and highlight the daily reality of war and persecution.

More information about the book can be found via the publisher.

The book is only available in Dutch.
