Katharina Freise

Biography

Katharina Freise graduated in Translation Studies from the University of Saarbrücken, Germany in 1997 and has since worked in various translation and research management roles in Germany, Italy and the UK. At NIOD, Katharina is leading on two work packages within two EU-funded projects that will both further develop and establish the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) as an independent, permanent European infrastructure. Katharina is responsible for developing EHRI’s business plan, implementation strategy and medium- to long-term sustainability strategy. The latter includes an innovation roadmap and an expanded portfolio of impact activities to strengthen EHRI’s relevance beyond academia.

Before moving to the Netherlands and joining NIOD, Katharina developed her research support and management expertise at the University of Birmingham (UK), most recently working with researchers in social sciences and the humanities on nurturing sustainable, innovative and inclusive research environments and developing and delivering strategies for non-academic impact. Prior to that, she supported researchers in the Humanities faculty with the development of competitive proposals to secure national and international funding, including from the European Union. In this role, she particularly enjoyed reviewing and assessing draft proposals to help craft the best possible case for funding and working closely with the researchers on developing strong public engagement and impact plans.
